Detailed Introduction of Vespel® SP-21

Vespel® SP-21 is a high-performance graphite-filled polyimide (PI) molding compound manufactured by DuPont, specifically engineered for wear-resistant and high-temperature applications. As a modified PI material with 15% graphite filling, it combines the inherent excellent thermal and chemical resistance of PI with enhanced tribological properties, making it a preferred choice in various extreme industrial scenarios.
·Core Properties: Thermal Performance: It features a continuous operating temperature of up to 260°C (500°F) and can withstand short-term exposure to temperatures as high as 482°C (900°F). Even at cryogenic temperatures down to -269°C (-452°F), the material retains good toughness without brittle fracture. The glass transition temperature is 143°C, and the melting point reaches 385°C, ensuring stable performance under extreme temperature fluctuations.
·Tribological Properties: The addition of 15% graphite significantly reduces the friction coefficient to approximately 0.15-0.25, enhancing wear resistance and self-lubricating performance. This allows the material to operate stably in oil-free or low-lubrication environments, reducing maintenance costs and extending service life.
·Mechanical Strength: It possesses excellent mechanical properties, including high tensile strength, good impact resistance (notched Izod impact strength: 8 kJ/m²), and outstanding creep and fatigue resistance. These properties ensure long-term stable operation under static and dynamic loads.
·Electrical Insulation: As an insulating material, Vespel® SP-21 has excellent dielectric properties, with a dielectric constant of 3.8 (1 MHz), a dielectric strength of 18 kV/mm, and a low dielectric loss (tanδ = 0.003 at 1 MHz), making it suitable for high-frequency and high-voltage electrical insulation applications.
·Chemical Resistance: It is resistant to most acids, bases, organic solvents, aviation fuels, hydraulic oils, and other harsh chemical media. It also has excellent hydrolysis resistance and aging resistance, enabling long-term use in corrosive environments.
·Other Advantages: The material is black in appearance and complies with FDA food contact standards. It is a thermosetting material that requires isostatic pressing or direct forming (DF) processes and can be machined into precision components with high dimensional stability.
·Typical Applications: Due to its comprehensive performance, Vespel® SP-21 is widely used in aerospace (such as high-temperature wear-resistant components in engine compartments), industrial machinery (bearings, bushings, seals, high-temperature sliding parts), semiconductor equipment (insulating and wear-resistant components), food processing machinery (food contact parts), and medical devices (components that require repeated sterilization and wear resistance).
